Weekly Drop(💧) #3
Hey friends,
Here is a drop of what I have been up to during the week.
Body -> Mind -> Everything else
This week I had a lot conversations with folks about how to prioritize things in order to be successful. My take away from those was that success means totally different things for everyone. These differences are the reason why some people prioritize some things over others in order to be successful. I looked at my own life and decided to write about what is my number one priority and why is it important.
You can read the post here.
My first Desktop build
I am an Android developer and I recently started building some iOS apps too. For those who are not developers, all the software used to develop these apps plus Google chrome mean trouble to computer resources.
After 3 years I got to a point where my old MacBook pro with 16GB of RAM and 128 GB was no longer enough to my ever growing need of processing power(Did I mention I am planning to do motion design with After effects too 😅).
At first I thought of buying a new laptop. After some coercion from friends and some research, building a ***intosh( Apparently it is no legal to build one) seemed like the best option.
Here is a price comparison between a laptop that I need and a custom built computer in CAD:
Macbook Pro 16 - $5,372.02 CAD
2.4GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
1TB SSD storage
16-inch Retina display with True Tone
Four Thunderbolt 3 ports
Touch Bar and Touch ID
Backlit Magic Keyboard - US English
Accessory Kit
My Custom build - $2,462 CAD
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory
1.2TB SSD storage
Support for Apple watch unlock , handoff and all the fun stuff.
In short, my build is less than the half of the laptop and it is way more powerful. Not only is more powerful but has the potential for getting better by adding other parts.
I spent the whole last week assembling the computer and installing stuff. It was hard because there are so many cables and new things I had to learn. But in the end it was a very rewarding experience that I can now say that everyone can totally go through without no prior knowledge.
The only downside of not going with the laptop is the loss of mobility. I plan to solve this by keeping the computer running all the time and use my laptop as remote workstation whenever I travel. I hope to write a bit more about his whenever I start doing that.
If you want to build something similar or even less cheaper at your own pace, here is the list of parts I used: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/realdm22/saved/#view=sZLpBm. If you have questions drop them as comments on the list and I will be happy to help you create a list that makes sense for your needs and budget.
Here is how my new setup looks like:
What I am reading - Grit by Angela Duck worth
This is a very good book and it seems that I could have not timed my life better to start reading it now. I am still reading it but here is my favorite quote from what I have seen so far:
Our potential is one thing. What we do is something else.
Treat of the week
Last week I shared a link to the hustle newsletter. If reading is not your thing My first million podcast is the next best thing you can get for free from the same people.
This is pretty much the only podcast I listen to at the moment because the hosts are so chilled, they talk about interesting stuff and feels like a genuine conversation I would see myself having with them.
I like food, I like unique food and was pleased to listen to last week episode were they riffed about companies doing food drop of interesting items and open salaries.
You can listen on spotify by tapping the card below or on your favorite podcast place.
As always, I really appreciate your attention and wish you an amazing week ahead.
Cheers,
Dario
